I have had an interest in Mindfulness for the past 6 years, setting up a mindfulness personal practice group in January 2013 and an All Party Parliamentary Group in Parliament in May 2014. 95 MP’s and Lords have been on the course and felt the personal benefit of mindfulness. There is now a desire by members of political parties in the House of Commons and House of Lords to take this personal practice into policy areas, such as health, education, criminal justice, and the work place.
Practitioners such as Jon Kabat-Zinn, Arianna Huffington and Ruby Wax have visited Parliament and helped to push this agenda. The Prime Minister David Cameron is committed to wellbeing by mentioning it in 2010.
Ministers like Education Minister Liz Truss, and Shadow Ministers like Andy Burnham and Tristram Hunt are now actively looking at the role of mindfulness in policy.
The Mindfulness Initiative who are ably supporting our Parliamentary group are now looking at developing policy which can be taken to all political parties before the next General Election to be delivered in the next Parliament.
